about

Julian Sartorius climbs to the heights: on his new "Hidden Tracks" album, the drummer takes the route that leads from the Italian village of Domodossola (272m above sea level) to the peak of Weissmies (4017m above sea level) in the Valais in Switzerland. There is an altitude difference of 3745 metres between these two points.

The much sought-after musician (Sophie Hunger, Matthew Herbert, Kae Tempest, among others) makes these metres in altitude tangible with sounds and tones that he found on this route in the city, villages and nature with his drumsticks - and his recording device. And the higher he climbs, the more minimal the sounds become.

The rhythmically precisely sequenced sound journey visualises our landscape, our living worlds and our nature in an unheard-of way.

All the sounds were recorded on the hike and climb from Domodossola (272 metres above sea level) to the summit of Weissmies (4017 metres above sea level) in September 2021.
All things played were found en route and were left in situ. Audio gathered was edited and layered. No electronic effects or sound processing were used.

Drummer, percussionist and artist Julian Sartorius forms sounds into previously unseen shapes. His precise and multi-layered rhythmical patterns are keen excursions into the hidden tones of found objects and prepared instruments, bridging the gap between organic timbres and the vocabulary of electronic music. ... more
